First National Seminar of Muscular Dystrophy

MDF-Nepal organized first national seminar on muscular Dystrophy on 14th December 2003. The seminar was organized with following objectives:

  • Dissemination of information regarding Muscular Dystrophy diseases,
  • Discuss; share views and experiences of Medical Experts, Policymakers and families of MDF patients.
  • Finding possible ways of cure, treatment and rehabilitation of MD patients.
  • To present and formulate national report to the government seeking to development framework on MD
  • Develop and avail framework for MD treatment.

196 participants from various agencies and organization including HMG, Ministry of Health, Teaching Hospital, Medical Professionals, Neurophysicians, Orthopedicians, Chest Physician, Pediatrics’, Physiotherapists, Health and social workers from different organizations, Representatives of Chamber of commerce and trade associations, volunteers, Parent/Patients of MD and journalist from different media were presence on the seminar.

The seminar was started with inauguration of Dr. Prabha Basnet, Member-secretary of Social Welfare Council. A book on Muscular Dystrophy "An Introduction on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy" in Nepali language Written by Mr. Anil K. Upadhyay (as a parent, President of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, Nepal and Secretary of MDF-Nepal) launched on the occasion. The cost of book is NRs. 50/-(Fifty only) for DMD children welfare.

On the core session Prof. Dr. J.P. Agrawal deliver a presentation on "Overview on Muscular Dystrophy" Dr. Rohit Pokhrel deliver a presentation on Genetic aspect of MD & Need assessment and Management of Orthopedics/Physiotherapy on MD. Mr. Deepak Dangol delivered about application of Physiotherapy to patient of MD. Mr. Anil k. Upadhyay deliver his experience about a parent's feeling with MD child and why we are in working in this field here in Nepal as voluntary. The session was chaired by Mr. Jai Prakash Agrawal, President of MDF-Nepal. Vote of thank given by Mr. Mahesh Agrawal (treasurer of MDF-Nepal) and Mrs. Karuna Pokharel (parents of DMD child) in first and second session accordingly.
